If you’re anything like me, you suck at coloring in stamped images. Seriously, I don’t know how some people do it. Here are 5 Tips to help you color in those stamped images while adding character.

Coloring in stamped images should be an art form. Getting the perfect blend, highlighting correctly and making sure to use the right colors is quite a task! I’m here to give some tips to those of those who aren’t so skilled at the aforementioned skills.

"How

Outline First

This tip takes me back to my younger years when I used to outline my coloring book pages before coloring them in fully. I’m not so good at deciding where shadows should be so I often start with outlining. It helps to visualize the shadows a little better.

Highlight

Try to keep your highlights and shadows in the same areas. While coloring, shade the bottom left darker than the top right and you will instantly create highlights and shadows.

"Lawn

Use Brush Strokes

When coloring in animals, you can add brush strokes to instantly create character. Filling in areas with faux hair will create dimension. Try using a blend of different colors to add even more depth.

Use Shadows

This one is a little different from shadows in the actual picture. I’m talking about adding shadows outside of your stamped image, underneath the image. It will help with depth and adds a nice touch. To achieve this look just add a very light grey color underneath and blend it out.

"How

Doodle

When all else fails, I usually add small doodles. I will do this to cover up errors, like going out of the lines or just to add a more cartoon or stylized look to the image. It’s not as hard as you might think. I usually just add small swirls and hash tags randomly along the outline.

Supplies
